Ralph Lyster on his first visit to France to view that country's Limousin cattle. |
The stud was founded in 1994 by Geoff's parents Ralph and Ellen Lyster who farmed at Mundijong, WA. They travelled overseas to France and visited the Limousin stud of Pierre Gardette. Ralph was very impressed with Pierre's bull, Heros Bis and from there the opportunity arose to import semen from the bull.
Geoff sourced his own stud cows and his first Heros Bis calves were born in 1998 with Lysgorran Tracee winning the Brunswick All Breeds Heifer Show the following year.
Since then Heros Bis progeny have won the Progeny Class at the Perth Royal four times. Heros Progeny have proven to have excellent temperament, ease of calving and terrific growth. One Heros Bis son, Lysgorran Vulysses, is a polled bull and was winner of the Supreme Limousin exhibit at the 2004 Perth Royal Show.
Together with Joan and Ian Symons, Lanaud Limousin Stud, Victoria, we own the Australian rights to Heros Bis and Nelson semen. The sires Nelson, Lino and Nenuphar are now being used over Heros Bis daughters and have dropped some very impressive calves this year.
All AI work is done by Geoff, with Richard Hall, Westside AB, involved with flushing and ET work.
On July 6, 2005 69 embryos were implanted with 28 of these from the La Riviere Limousin stud of Pierre Gardette. This was the beginning of a joint venture between the two studs with the stud La Riviere Australia formed.
Apart from the stud, a commercial herd of 200 breeders is run including mostly Murray Grey and Limousin cows. Limousin bulls are used, with their impact showing up in the quality and temperament of the calves.
Temperament is a huge factor in the culling program with both the commercial and stud herds and is being improved constantly through breeding and management.
